This week at Rose Hill we are smack-dab in the middle of Vacation Bible School.  VBS is a fun time for kids: a time for music, recreation, cookies(!!) and intense Bible teaching.  What makes the teaching "intense" is the fact that the children have lessons for 5 nights in a row.  (That does seem like a lot when you consider that most kids only receive about 2 hours of Bible teaching a week via Sunday School and Children's Church.

But is that really a lot of time?

The public school year is 180 days long.  Children are in school roughly 6 hours a day.  That equates to 1080 hours of education per school year.   By comparison, the average child spends 2 hours a week in a combined Sunday School/Children's Church setting.   2 hours multiplied by 52 weeks in a year’s equals 104 hours. A child would require over 10 years in church to equal the hour spent in one year of public school education.

That means a child would have to attend church for over 120 years to receive the time equivalents of a 12 year public school education.

Obviously, public education is important.  But Bible education is important too: after all, we're preparing for eternity!   Clearly a young person can't learn all they need to spiritually just by going to Sunday School, church or even VBS.  Time must be spent in personal study if the child is ever going to grow to maturity.

By the way adults....how much time do YOU spend each year in spiritual education?

 See you Sunday!
