September 2010: From the desk of the Elders

What a beautiful summer God has blessed our Church family with!  As the
Fall season approaches, we can look forward to the great harvesting time of year. One might think that I mean this in a human, material way, but I want for us to think of our harvest in a Spiritual way. Soon we will be picking the fruits of our labor (vegetables and fruit). This is a time when we share our fruits with our friends and family, but I would like us to think about our Spiritual Harvest.

We should be planting our seeds to those who don't know Jesus Christ as their savior. This would then allow us to come back to answer questions they would have and thus giving us an opportunity to harvest our labor toward leading people toward acceptance of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  We have been taught by the words of God himself, (and I quote in Galatians Chapter 6 verses 6-10):
(6) Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.
(7) Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
(8) The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Sprit, from the Sprit will reap eternal life.
(9) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
(10) Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

To our family in Christ we pray: Let us give thanks to God for his love for us, through Jesus Christ.  May our walk with Jesus, in our lives, produce an abundance of good harvest for God. We know that our reward awaits us, where no one can take it from us. Happy Harvest to all the saints at Rose hill Church of Christ!
Sincerely yours, through the Blood of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Days of August - Message From the Elders PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 July 2010 11:58

The dog days of August are upon us, the days when it gets so hot and humid no one wants to do anything but sit in the air conditioning.  I plan on doing my share of that.   However, while we are all just sitting around, I suggest that we can make good use of the time by doing something that I believe Christians have gotten away from.   That something is meditating.  Meditating has gotten a bad rap recently because the meaning of the word has been abused by certain religions.  They claim that when meditating we should empty our minds of everything.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  David was a man after God’s own heart and he spent a lot of time meditating, which he talked about in the Psalms.  From the Psalms we find that we should be meditating about the following:

The Law of the Lord                                  Ps 1:1-3
God’s unfailing love                                     Ps 48:8-10
God’s miracles, mighty works, and wonders    Ps 77:11-13, Ps 119:26-28
God’s precepts, ways, and decrees               Ps 119:14-16, 22-24

This is a lot to think about, but August should give us plenty of opportunity.

Changing of the seasons almost always brings my mind back to the passage from Romans PDF Print E-mail

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

The changing of the seasons almost always brings my mind back to the passage above from Romans. God is constantly using nature to reinforce what Scripture teaches us about Him. Spring is a good time of year to learn how God can restore life. In the past couple of weeks the hostas and ferns in my garden have been growing rapidly. Now there are clumps of green when before there was only brown dirt and mulch. The ferns are particularly remarkable. In the winter there is only what looks like a dead, brown stump left over from the fern the previous fall. It looks like it has no chance of living again. However, once it feels the warmth of spring the fronds rapidly uncurl into the fern. However, God has something even more amazing in store for us.

Read the following passage from I Corinthians 15.

The Resurrection Body

What is important to you? What are the priorities in your life? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 30 March 2010 15:07

What is important to you?  What are the priorities in your life?  For most, these are easy questions.  Answers of God, Christ, your family members such as your spouse, children, parents, your friends, your health, your job, etc. all come quickly to mind.

God teaches us through the Bible how we should begin prioritizing what is important to us.  In 1 Corinthians 15:3-5 the Bible states:  “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:  that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.”

“First importance” means exactly what it says, that nothing else comes before it.  God wants you to put your faith and belief in Jesus Christ first in your life.  In Ephesians 2:20 Christ is described as being the chief cornerstone.  From this and other scriptures, God is teaching us that the foundation and building of your life should be based on Christ for it to be solid and sound.  Christ is of first importance.  You may think that you should put your family, such as your children or your spouse, first, and while God teaches us that they also are very important, they should not take the place of Christ and be of first importance.

CHOSEN BY GOD
Ephesians 1:3-4: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
When we read this passage we must realize that it is God who chose us. (John 15:16) Jesus said to his disciples: "You did not choose me, I chose you.) Here is the wonder of it all: It is not so wonderful that we chose God; the wonder is that God chose us.
It is important for us to remember that he chose us before the creation of the world to be holy (set apart from the world to be different. Consider Jesus who did not conform to the expectations of those who he came to save. He was born in a manger, grew up in a normal household, learned to work with his hands. Satan temped him with riches and power and he never lost sight as to what his purpose was; to restore the relationship between man and his Heavenly Father which has been destroyed by sin.)
We are to be blameless in God's sight ( We live in a world today that accepts most anything. Sexual immorality, envy, murder, strife and malice, just to name a few. It is bad enough that these things exist in the world but, the church itself has be infected with these sins as well. We have forgotten that while Christ died and set us free from from sin, we have the responsibility to battle these sins in our own lives. We must strive to be blameless before God. Strife and malice are two sins which can destroy and congregation and bring shame upon the Body of Christ.
